Overview
Before comparing fixtures, write one sentence: “I need to grow ___ over an area ___ long and ___ wide.” Raising tomato transplants for a few weeks is a different task from producing tomatoes to harvest indoors.
Read the label as four separate questions
Iowa State Extension explains the distinction between source output and light reaching a surface, and why PPFD is particularly useful for plant lighting. These measurements answer different questions; none becomes more informative because a seller prints it in larger type. Important considerations for supplemental plant light
Do not treat a stated electrical wattage as a “bad” number. You need it for planning running costs. Just keep energy use separate from evidence that the fixture suits the crop and area.

Ask for the conditions behind the PPFD number
A single impressive reading at the center does not tell you what happens at the corners. Look for readings across a stated footprint, at a stated distance, with the dimmer setting identified. If a reflective enclosure was part of the setup, that should be clear too.
Use this as a buying checklist:
This is a practical application of lighting-plan principles: establish the required intensity at crop height and consider distribution across the growing area. If those details are missing, ask for them. “Covers four square feet” has little meaning without describing what is being grown and the intensity delivered there.
- Does the measurement area match the trays or pots you want to light?
- Is the listed distance measured from the fixture to the plant canopy?
- Can your shelf provide that distance as plants grow taller?
- Are there edge readings, not only a peak value?
- Is the measurement associated with the exact model and power setting?
Add time: a bright moment is not a full day
Daily light integral, or DLI, adds up photosynthetic light received over the day. A fixed artificial light can provide the same intensity each hour it is on, but a window’s contribution changes with weather and sun angle. For a constant artificial PPFD:
DLI = PPFD × hours on × 0.0036.
For example, 200 µmol/m²/s for 14 hours supplies about 10.1 mol/m²/day from that light. At 100 µmol/m²/s for the same period, it supplies about 5.0. These are arithmetic examples, not recommended targets for every seedling. The formula and distinction between intensity and duration are described by Iowa State Extension.
Do not try to solve every shortfall by leaving lights on all night. Day length can affect plant development, and appropriate schedules vary with the crop. Select a timer schedule from crop guidance, then choose enough light for that schedule. An apparently cheap fixture becomes less useful if it cannot supply the required light under workable conditions.
A seedling shelf need not imitate a commercial grow room
For a short transplant-growing period, a well-chosen standard fixture can be adequate; a premium horticultural label is not itself a requirement. Make the installation part of the comparison. An adjustable bar or panel that fits the shelf may be more useful than a powerful spotlight with awkward coverage. Allow for taller pots after transplanting seedlings into larger containers. Put the controls where you can reach them without moving plants or pulling on cables.
Follow the fixture’s mounting and electrical instructions, including any restrictions around moisture. Do not copy a close fluorescent-tube spacing recommendation onto an unrelated high-output LED panel. Fixture designs differ.
Check results, then change one thing
After installation, record the height, dimmer setting, and timer schedule. Observe new growth. Long, thin stems may indicate insufficient light; bleaching or scorch can indicate excessive exposure, although watering, temperature, and other problems also need consideration. If you adjust placement or output, change one factor and keep a note. Iowa State recommends observing growth and fine-tuning a setup rather than assuming the first installation is final. Adjustable fixtures make that process easier. Setting up supplemental lights
Estimate running energy with actual draw: a hypothetical 40-watt fixture operating 14 hours daily for 30 days uses 16.8 kWh. Multiply that by your electricity rate for an approximate energy charge. This does not include other equipment or rate-plan details.
Buy for the crop, the footprint, and the installation you can maintain. Clear measurements and a workable setup tell you more than “full spectrum,” lumens, or wattage alone.
What the shortlisted models actually document
The shortlist compares fixture formats and published evidence. It does not establish equal canopy coverage. Soltech Vita offers narrow and wide optics with manufacturer placement guidance; its PPF describes emitted plant light, not a measured average across your shelf. Confirm the optic before following its hanging guidance.
SANSI BR30 36W publishes a PPFD statement at one foot and measurement graphics. One point cannot establish uniform coverage: check the exact distance and the edges of the intended plant area.
Barrina MF10 documents its bar format, power and package. Our catalog does not establish its average PPFD across a canopy. Ask for an exact-model map at your mounting distance before treating it as coverage-equivalent to a different fixture.
