When shopping, ask for the botanical name and photograph the whole plant. The word monstera may refer to a different species, and a close crop of one perforated leaf can make the distinctions hard to assess. Record whether the sale pot contains one stem or several separate plants. A multi-stem pot gives immediate fullness but changes how many growing tips and support routes you will need to manage.
Do not use the number of splits in a nursery photograph as a guaranteed specification. It describes a leaf that already developed under particular conditions. Your useful buying information includes current stem structure, plant size, root condition, and the space needed to keep future growth accessible. Reserve a volume of room, not a circle on the floor

Mark where the pot will sit, then look outward along the leaf stalks. The usable space includes the sweep of leaves, the support behind the stem, and your own approach for inspection. A plant tucked tightly between furniture can fit its footprint while leaving nowhere for a new leaf to open. Open doors, curtains, and nearby drawers before deciding that the corner is suitable.
Choose an endpoint you can maintain. Perhaps you can accommodate a supported specimen near one window but cannot move a larger container through the doorway. Perhaps the available daylight falls on a tabletop rather than the floor. These are useful constraints to resolve before buying. They can lead to choosing a smaller specimen, a different location, or another plant rather than repeatedly trying to force the room around a growing vine.
Separate leaf maturity from a care diagnosis

Comparing them as though they were successive leaves can create a false impression that the entire plant is declining.
Ask first whether the new growth is sound and whether the plant remains manageable. If you want increasingly large foliage, allow enough space for that result and review the actual daylight available. Before shortening a vine, identify the portion that will remain in the pot and the portion you intend to root. Make sure both decisions fit the available space. Prepare a clean work surface, a receiving container, and a way to support the cutting before making the cut.
